In Lyon, France, this week, a hat reported to be worn by Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo sold for more than $400,000 at auction to a European collector passionate about the First French Empire.

According to CNN, the hat, which was sold 203 years to the day after the French emperor’s defeat at the famous battle, is believed to be one of about 120 two-cornered military dress hats worn by Napoleon. “Historians have identified only 19 remaining hats, most of them now in museums. Napolean kept 12 in hats in service, and each hat had a three-year life span, according to the DeBaecque auction house.
